There’s something about koalas that makes spotting this beautiful animal the highpoint of a holiday. Gunnedah is known as the Koala Capital of the World, and while our population has faced its share of challenges, including extended droughts, the region is still home to a native population.

To protect our beloved species into the future, a Koala Sanctuary and Hospital is being planned to provide specialist care and facilities within the region – and to provide a wonderful place to come and visit koalas. It will also have a petting zoo, café and picnic areas. The centre is expected to open in 2024.

Wild koalas have been spotted at Anzac Park, Porcupine Lookout, Gunnedah Golf Course, the stock Road walking/cycleway, TAFE Campus, the Hunter Street cemetery, the Showground area near the Kennel Club grounds, and Curlewis. Some of our students have even seen them strolling through their school grounds!
